Can You Eat Popcorn with Braces?
Written by the Diamond Braces clinical team · Updated October 29, 2026
No. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) lists popcorn among the foods to avoid for the whole time you have braces, together with other hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy foods that can damage brackets and wires. Kernels and hulls wedge between brackets and under the gums, and caramel corn adds a sticky coating. That goes for "hulless," mushroom and movie theater popcorn too. Pick a soft snack until your braces come off, and call your orthodontist if a bracket or wire breaks.

Why Popcorn Is a Problem With Braces
The AAO's guidance is to avoid foods that are hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy and that can't be modified to eat without getting stuck, because they may damage braces and brackets. Its list includes popcorn, caramels, taco chips, hard pretzels, hard candies and nuts.
Popcorn causes trouble in two ways. Biting down on a hard or unpopped kernel can break a bracket or bend a wire. And the thin hulls slip between brackets and under the gumline, where they are hard to clean out and can irritate your gums.
A broken bracket or wire usually means an extra visit. The AAO says to let your orthodontist know right away about broken brackets or loose wires, because they can put treatment behind schedule.
What About Hulless, Mushroom or Caramel Popcorn?
Popcorn labeled "hulless" isn't truly free of hulls, mushroom popcorn is still crunchy, and both can hide hard kernels. The AAO's list doesn't make an exception for them, so treat them like any other popcorn.
Caramel and other coated popcorn are worse: the AAO lists caramels as a food to avoid, and the sticky coating clings to brackets and holds sugar against your teeth.
Popcorn With Invisalign
Clear aligners are different. Invisalign says there are no food restrictions during treatment, because you take the aligners out to eat. Remove them before you eat popcorn, then brush and clean between your teeth before you put them back, so no hulls are trapped under the plastic.
If Popcorn Gets Stuck in Your Braces
- Rinse with water, then brush around each bracket.
- Floss gently with a floss threader or orthodontic floss to work the hull out.
- Don't use toothpicks or other sharp objects to dig it out.
- If a bracket is loose or a wire is poking, cover it with orthodontic wax and call your orthodontist, as the AAO advises.
Snacks to Eat Instead
Soft snacks are the safe choice: yogurt, pudding, soft fruit such as bananas or berries, applesauce, and soft cheese. For more ideas, see our guide to snacks to eat with braces, whether you can eat chips with braces, and our overview of what you can and cannot eat with braces.
